Are Jet Skis Safe?
Texas. Jet skis can be a great way to enjoy the sun and surf, but in recent news we’ve seen more cases where people have ended up dead or injured after riding a jet ski. Fox News recently reported on the death of Usher’s stepson and the death of a retired astronaut due to jet ski accidents. Are you at risk? And what can you do to stay safe if you choose to ride one this summer?
The U.S. Coast Guard reports that several hundred people are injured in jet ski accidents every year. Another several dozen are killed in jet ski crashes. In the most serious jet ski accidents, victims can suffer spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and even death. Then, there’s the risk of drowning. If a person is seriously injured and rescue is not nearby, there is always the real risk that the person might drown.
While regulations of jet skis vary, in many locations, individuals can rent the watercraft with limited training. Combine these powerful water vehicles with beachgoers, swimmers, and other jet skis, and you have a recipe for accidents. While some states are increasing the requirements that jet ski riders must meet, not all states have strict limitations on who can ride a jet ski and where.
So, what can you do to stay safe? If you plan to buy a jet ski, consider taking a personal watercraft safety course. Think of it as a long-term investment in your safety and future. You’ll also want to wear a floatation safety vest that fits you properly. Ideally, buy one that can keep your head out of the water, even if you happen to be knocked unconscious. You never know what can happen.
According to Nationwide, jet skis are classified as Class A vessels by the U.S. Coast Guard and all applicable rules apply to them. Don’t know the rules for class A vessels? Now might be a good time to take a Coast Guard approved course. When riding a jet ski, give right of way to larger vessels and watch out for swimmers. Better yet, don’t jet ski in areas where there are swimmers. Finally, remember that, like any vehicle, your jet ski needs time to stop. Take that into consideration when riding.
Summer is a great time to try new things, but be sure to get proper training before you hop on a jet ski. These are dangerous vehicles that can operate at high speeds. Like a car accident, jet ski crashes can be devastating.
