Car Explodes After Crashing into Home, Sends 4 to Hospital
According to WFAA, a family from North Texas was hospitalized following a freak accident at their home. On a Saturday afternoon earlier this month, a car crashed into their house in Hurst, striking a gas line.
The force of the impact caused an explosion, which was captured by surveillance cameras across the street. Police had responded to the scene at the 400 block of Myrtle Drive shortly after 1 p.m., and the home exploded as one officer was walking toward it.
Authorities heard screams coming from inside the house and broke down a back door to rescue its occupants. They found an older couple and their adult son inside the home at the time of the accident.
Responders took the couple to Parkland Hospital in Dallas and transported their son to a local hospital in Hurst. According to the woman’s brother, she sustained second-degree burns over 30 percent of her body. After sedating her, doctors were able to stabilize her.
Fortunately, the woman, her husband, and their son were pulled from the home shortly after the explosion; however, the natural gas fire burned for nearly three hours. One of the responding officers was treated for injuries at the scene, and another was taken to a local hospital.

Motorist Who Caused the Crash That Led to the Explosion Was Violating the Law at the Time
WFAA reports police arrested the 40-year-old man who had been driving the SUV that crashed into the couple’s home. He was allegedly driving without a license.
He told officers that he lost control of his vehicle because the brakes failed. Police conducted a field sobriety test at the scene, which he passed. According to court records in Tarrant County, though, the man has a history of driving while intoxicated. He received a DUI conviction in 2003.
Injured Parties May Have Multiple Options for Pursuing Compensation
Since Texas is a tort state in regard to motor vehicle collisions and subsequent insurance claims, the couple and their son may be able to recover compensation for the damages from the motorist’s auto insurance provider. Because his policy limits will probably only cover a portion of the damages, though, they may have to pursue other avenues of compensation, as well.
Fortunately, homeowners insurance typically covers damage that results from a car crashing into the structure. Most standard policies include this as a covered peril.
In order to secure compensation, though, policyholders must cover their deductible first. If it turns out the man’s brakes did fail, the injured parties may also be able to file a claim against the auto or parts manufacturer.
