Thirteen people were injured in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 35E that involved a semi-truck and two passenger buses, reports the Tyler Morning Telegraph. According to authorities, traffic had slowed due to construction work when a Megabus – carrying 37 passengers – slammed into the back of a semi-truck before striking an Americanos bus.

Rear-end accidents such as this are far more common than they should be. Tailgating is a primary cause of rear-end collisions, which account for 23 percent of all motor-vehicle crashes. According to the Texas Department of Insurance, rear-end wrecks kill approximately 2,000 people and cause 950,000 injuries every year.
If you were injured or lost a family member due to a driver who was tailgating, speeding or otherwise behaving negligently, contact the Cooper Law Firm. N. Eric Cooper is a truck accident attorney in Tyler who will help you navigate the claims process and recover the highest possible compensation.

4 Tips to Help Passenger-Vehicle Drivers Avoid Accidents with Semi-Trucks
18-wheelers are much larger and heavier than passenger cars, so even a slow-speed crash is likely to cause severe injuries. Fortunately, there are steps that drivers can take to reduce their risk of getting in a truck accident. These four strategies are particularly effective:
- Maintain a Safe Following Distance
If you tailgate a semi-truck, then you will not be able to survey the road ahead. As a result, you will have a harder time anticipating dangerous situations.
If you are being tailgated by an 18-wheeler, you should change lanes and let it pass. Large trucks require a longer stopping distance, and a trucker who tailgates is likely to cause a rear-end accident.
- Avoid Driving in “No Zones”
Semi-trucks and buses have large blind spots, or No Zones, and drivers should make a concerted effort to avoid those areas. There are four No Zones: one directly in the front of the truck, one directly behind, and one on either side.
- Be Cautious When an 18-Wheeler Is Turning
It is not easy to make an acute turn in a large truck. CDL drivers often have to enter adjacent lanes when cornering. If you are approaching an intersection and a truck appears to be turning, then slow down and expect it to enter the adjacent lane.
- Do Not Cut off a Semi-Truck
As previously mentioned, large trucks require a longer stopping distance than passenger vehicles. If you suddenly change lanes in front of an 18-wheeler and then hit your brakes, a rear-end accident is likely to happen. Do not change lanes in front of a big rig until you can see both of its headlights in your rear-view mirror.
Unfortunately, even the safest drivers are not immune to collisions. If you were hurt in a truck crash that another motorist caused, contact a Tyler personal-injury lawyer from the Cooper Law Firm.
