Head-on Collision between Car and Pickup Truck Leaves Motorist in Critical Condition
According to The Eagle, a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a car on Texas 21 left the driver of the car in critical condition. The accident happened on a Friday evening late last month.
The Department of Public Safety reports that shortly before 7 p.m., an 83-year-old man in a Toyota Camry was traveling west in the eastbound lane when his vehicle collided head-on with an eastbound pickup truck towing a spool of fracking hose. Responders rushed the driver of the Toyota to CHI St. Joseph Hospital in critical condition.
State troopers determined that the accident happened fairly close to the man’s home. No one else was hurt in the crash.
Head-on collisions often result in devastating injuries because the force of impact is so great. If you were hurt in a head-on collision with a drunk, distracted, or reckless driver, contact the Cooper Law Firm.

What Should You Do If You Are Faced with an Inevitable Head-on Collision?
In most cases, head-on collisions come out of nowhere, but there is the occasional scenario in which a motorist has time to respond to an impending crash. If you are faced with a head-on collision and have time to react, there are generally three steps you should take to avoid the accident or at least lessen its impact. These are:
- Decelerating while still maintaining control of the vehicle;
- Veering toward the right; and
- Choosing your crash.
Reducing Your Speed
If you notice another vehicle coming straight toward you, your first reaction may be to slam on the brakes. If you are traveling fairly slowly, this may be the best approach, but when you are driving so fast that a skid would likely result if you braked suddenly, you should avoid doing. Instead, try to decelerate as much as possible while still maintaining control of your car.
Veering to the Right
It is always better to collide with a ditch or shoulder than an oncoming vehicle. By veering to the right, you may be able to avoid the other motorist entirely, especially if he or she realizes the impending crash and makes a correction before reaching you.
Preparing for Impact
If you spot a potential head-on collision up ahead, it is critical that you assess the situation as quickly as possible so you can respond accordingly. In most cases, hitting a stationary object like a barrier will cause significantly less damage, especially if you merely sideswipe it. If you must choose between one or the other, make the appropriate maneuvers to avoid the head-on crash, and brace for impact.
