Overturned U-Haul Causes Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Involving Four 18-Wheelers and a Minivan
According to KLTV, a tragic accident involving four separate tractor-trailers and a minivan resulted in five fatalities late last month. The incident occurred on Interstate 30 in Mt. Pleasant on a Friday morning.
Investigators from the Texas Department of Public Safety attribute the collision to the congestion that resulted after a U-Haul truck overturned in the eastbound lanes, blocking traffic. The truck, which was towing a trailer, rolled over at around 7:15 a.m., blocking all the lanes near mile marker 165.
This single-vehicle wreck caused just minor injuries; however, in the congestion that followed, a fatal crash occurred. Approximately one hour after the initial accident, three different truckers failed to stop for the wreckage, clipping one another in traffic.
Upon approaching the scene, a fourth trucker failed to decelerate on time and rear-ended a minivan, pushing it into the back of the third 18-wheeler. The trucker in the fourth tractor-trailer, a 64-year-old woman, sustained fatal injuries in the impact.

Four Family Members Who Had Been Riding in the Minivan Died in the Crash
Riding inside the minivan that was sandwiched between two 18-wheelers was a family of five. The mother and her three children died from injuries sustained in the impact.
According to KTBS, she was 41 years old. Her children were 9, 6, and 2 years old.
Responders transported the 42-year-old father by air ambulance to a hospital in Tyler. He was placed in intensive care.
Each of the other truckers involved and one passenger sustained minor injuries. Responders took them to a local hospital for treatment.
Emergency crews reported to the scene to investigate and clear the wreckage. One eastbound lane reopened at approximately 2 p.m. The remaining lanes were not reopened until 9:30 p.m. Both the multi-vehicle collision and the initial rollover crash remain under investigation.
Sadly, accidents are always more common in heavy congestion, especially when the traffic is the result of a wreck. According to the Journal of Transportation Technologies, secondary collisions are a serious problem around the country because of “rubbernecking,” or the tendency to look at the crash as you pass instead of focusing on the road around you.
If you were hurt in a secondary accident because of a distracted driver, contact the Cooper Law Firm today. We understand the physical, financial, and emotional stress that an injury or wreck can place on you and your loved ones.
