According to the Star-Telegram, a 14-year-old girl who was riding home with her family after spending Thanksgiving at her grandparents’ house died from injuries sustained in a T-bone collision. The girl’s stepfather claims they were driving to Euless from Fort Worth when the accident happened.
Police determined that the crash occurred near the eastbound intersection of I-820 in the 5900 block of Azle Avenue. According to the girl’s stepfather, they were on a stretch of road where the speed limit was 40 mph when a motorist who was traveling 68 mph struck the side of their vehicle after running a red light.
The girl was riding in the backseat at the time, and she died from injuries sustained in the accident, including blunt force head trauma. She was a freshman at Colleyville Heritage High School and enjoyed cheerleading.
When the family hosted a vigil two days after the incident, nearly 1,000 people attended. Friends of the family have shared heartfelt messages on social media in the girl’s memory, and in some of those messages, they claimed the motorist who caused the collision was impaired; however, the local police department has not yet released an official report regarding the cause of the crash.

How Can You Avoid a Drunk Driving Collision around the Holidays?
Sadly, drunk driving is especially common around the holidays. People are more likely to enjoy a few cocktails with their friends and family when they have cause to celebrate, and those who fail to do so responsibly put both themselves and everyone on the road around them at risk when they get behind the wheel after the festivities have ended.
The only foolproof way to avoid a drunk driving collision around the holidays is to stay off the roads entirely on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. For most people, though, this is not an option. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of getting into an accident with an impaired motorist. These include:
- Avoiding the roads fairly early in the morning, when people are more likely to drive themselves home after last call;
- Knowing the signs of drunk driving and responding accordingly if you spot them; and
- Driving defensively at all times.
If you were hurt in a drunk driving accident despite your best efforts to avoid one, contact the Cooper Law Firm. A Texas personal injury lawyer can gather evidence, track damages, interview witnesses, and negotiate with the opposing party on your behalf.
