How Can You Reduce the Risk of Getting into a Truck Accident?
Collisions between passenger vehicles and 18-wheelers are often devastating for the occupants of the passenger vehicle because trucks are so much larger than cars and can do significantly more damage. For this reason, it is wise for motorists to do everything in their power to avoid getting into a truck accident.
Although some truck accidents seemingly come out of nowhere, there are a few steps you can take to reduce the risk of colliding with an 18-wheeler. Read on to learn about just a few of them:
- Respect Their Size and Limitations
Because of their sheer length, trucks have certain limitations when it comes to maneuvering in traffic. Unfortunately, it is easy for motorists to forget these constraints, especially if they have never gotten behind the wheel of a big rig. When driving near 18-wheelers, it is important to remember that they
- Make wide right turns;
- Have large blind spots; and
- Require considerably more stopping distance because of their weight.
- Adjust Your Driving to the Road Conditions
Motorists should exercise additional caution around truckers when conditions are poor. Everything from limited visibility to slick roads can increase the chance of getting into a devastating crash with a tractor-trailer.
- Avoid Tailgating
Even if a commercial driver responds immediately to a hazard that arises, the truck itself may not necessarily stop quickly enough to prevent a collision. Because they are so heavy, trucks take much longer to stop than cars. As a result, you should never tailgate an 18-wheeler, nor should you cut in front of one and then brake quickly. Sadly, you can follow all the tips above and still end up in a devastating truck accident.
