Victim of Head-on Collision with Suspected Drunk Driver Will Need Extensive Surgery
According to KVUE, an allegedly impaired motorist who caused a head-on collision in Del Valle is now facing charges for intoxication assault, which is a third-degree felony. The accident happened late last month in the 12000 block of Pearce Lane.
Shortly before 7 p.m., local authorities received notice that a crash had occurred in the area. When police responded to the scene, they found one of the vehicles engulfed in flames and both cars with front-end damage.
Police determined that a 32-year-old man was traveling west on Pearce Lane when he crossed over the centerline into the eastbound lane and struck the other vehicle in a head-on impact. Emergency responders transported both motorists to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center for treatment.
The driver who had been traveling east sustained several broken bones in the neck, as well as a broken femur and facial injuries. Authorities report he will have to undergo surgery in order to facilitate the recovery process.
Police claim that after the other motorist vomited at the hospital, they smelled alcohol on his breath. Upon investigating the situation, law enforcement personnel determined that the man had been traveling from San Marcos to Austin, and they claim he admitted to taking a few shots approximately one hour before the incident occurred.

Speeding and Impairment Likely Played a Role in the Collision
When police questioned the accident victim about the cause of the crash, he said he saw the other vehicle traveling must faster than Pearce Lane’s posted speed limit of 45 mph. He also claimed he remembered seeing the vehicle traveling westbound as he was traveling eastbound right before the incident occurred.
Police requested a toxicology screening for the allegedly impaired motorist who caused the collision, and the results revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.186. The man was charged with intoxication assault, and a judge set his bond at $25,000.
In the man’s criminal affidavit, it states that he is a confirmed gang member who was on probation when the crash occurred. The affidavit also states there are 34 active suspensions on his Texas Identification Card.
Because alcohol affects coordination, impaired motorists are likely to drift out of their lane, and head-on collisions are common. Sadly, these kinds of accidents often cause debilitating injuries that have lasting repercussions for the victims.
